Why isn't my business showing on Google Maps? What 20 Dubai listings show

Why isn't my business showing on Google Maps?

Google ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is "how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for", distance is "how far each business is from the customer who's searching", and prominence is "how well-known a business is" (Google Business Profile Help). Start with relevance, because your main category takes a minute to check against what customers search for, then distance, because the person searching may simply be closer to a competitor. Reviews feed prominence, but they are not the whole story: in the Dubai Marina search BTR Consult recorded, the most-reviewed dentist ranked 3rd, behind a business with 178 reviews against its 1,039. Google also says plainly that "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking". This guide draws on 20 Google Maps listings in Dubai Marina and Jumeirah and a check of the websites of 17 of them.

What did BTR Consult find in Dubai's Google Maps results?

On 14 September 2026 BTR Consult recorded the first 10 Google Maps results that were not ads for two searches, "dentist Dubai Marina" and "aesthetic clinic Jumeirah", 20 listings in all. On 6 October 2026 we went back and checked the websites those listings link to, 17 distinct sites (two Dubai Marina listings belong to one group and share a website). No business is named.

FindingWhat we recorded
Was the most-reviewed business first? (Dubai Marina dentists)No. It ranked 3rd, with 1,039 reviews. The business in first place had 178, and 6 of the other 9 listings had more reviews than first place.
Reviews in the top three against positions 4 to 10 (average, Dubai Marina)489 against 259. One listing with 1,039 reviews pulls the top-three average up.
How many reviews does a typical Dubai Marina listing have?Median 191. 9 of 10 had 100 or more reviews.
Star ratingsBoth searches averaged 4.8.

Review counts in the "dentist Dubai Marina" Maps search, from the table above. Source: BTR Consult record of the first 10 non-ad results, 14 September 2026.

Jumeirah's review counts are not in the table. We hold two records of them and they do not agree, so we dropped the figures rather than pick one, and we did not record the Maps order for that search.

Four lessons sit in that table. Reviews help, but a high count does not buy first place. Star ratings barely separate the leaders, because both searches averaged the same 4.8. Late opening is the norm in these two searches, so a profile that closes at 6pm is the exception. Whitespark's expert panel scored "business is open at time of search" at 189, though that is opinion rather than Google's word. And a WhatsApp link on the homepage is common: 14 of the 16 readable sites had one.

The BTR Maps diagnosis: eight causes and how to check each on your phone

CauseHow to check itWhat to fix
Wrong or too general main categoryOpen your profile in Google Maps, tap Edit profile, check the main category. Compare it with the top three for your search.Pick the category that matches what customers search for. Google says "use as few categories as possible" and not to use them "solely as keywords".
You are far from the person searchingSearch your main service at your premises, then a few kilometres away. Note your position each time.Distance can't be changed. Make sure your address or service area is exact, and make the other signals strong.
Too few or old reviewsTap your review count, sort by newest, check the latest date. Compare your count with the top three.Ask every satisfied customer, with a direct link, all year round. Reply to every review.
Hours missing or different from your websiteRead your hours on Google, then on your website. Check Fridays and public holidays.Set regular and holiday hours on Google and make the website match.
Business name padded with keywordsCompare the name on your profile with your sign.Use your real-world name only. Google lists taglines and service words as not allowed.
Website link brokenOn your profile, tap Website on mobile data. Does it open?Fix or replace the link, and point it to the page for that location.
Phone number different, or not tap-to-callCompare the number on Google and on your website. Tap it on your website: does your phone start a call?Use one number everywhere and make it tap-to-call. Add WhatsApp if your customers use it.
Profile unclaimed or unverifiedSearch your business name. Do you see "Claim this business"?Claim and verify it, then fill every field accurately.

Each fix rests on Google's own guidelines for representing your business and the ranking factors above. In Whitespark's 2026 survey of 47 local search specialists, the primary category scored highest of any single factor for the map results, just ahead of the distance between the business and the searcher (Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors). That is expert opinion, not Google's statement.

If you run a clinic licensed by the Dubai Health Authority, its standard ST-21 sets the rules for what you post on social media, WhatsApp included. Our guide goes through it clause by clause: Dubai's social media advertising rules for clinics.

Once customers find you, can they reach you?

Showing up is half the job. Of the 16 Dubai Marina and Jumeirah websites we could read on 6 October 2026, 15 had a tap-to-call link, 14 had a WhatsApp link on the homepage, and one had neither. All 16 appeared to print a phone number as text. Half, 8 of 16, showed opening hours in the page itself (a text match that can miss hours drawn by scripts). Each of these takes minutes to fix, and each decides whether a customer who found you can get hold of you.

Does Google show the same results to everyone?

No. Results depend on where the person is standing and on the device. Our searches were recorded from a browser outside the UAE, so read the positions as one snapshot, not as what every customer sees. Checking your position once, from your own desk, tells you very little. Search from your premises and then from a neighbourhood your customers come from, and note the order each time.

Where BTR Consult fits

The free BTR Signal Score runs the searches your customers use from spots across your area, and shows where you come up, who customers pick instead and the first three things to fix. If you would rather do the fixing yourself, the full BTR Signal Score report (AED 179, once-off) puts every fix in order and writes your Google description, review request and WhatsApp away message. If you want the fixes made and kept up every month, that is what the Growth Engine does, with a report on what moved.

Method: 20 Google Maps listings recorded on 14 September 2026 (the first 10 non-ad results for each of two searches, from a browser outside the UAE; Maps order recorded for the Dubai Marina search only; results vary by place, device and time), and the 17 distinct websites of those listings checked on 6 October 2026 (one request each, raw page text only, so tap-to-call links, WhatsApp buttons or hours added by scripts may be missed; one site refused our request and is counted only for the download time and the secure connection). Correlation only, from small samples. Aggregates only. No business is named.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my business show on Google Maps at my clinic or shop but not across town?

Distance is one of the three factors Google uses to rank local results, along with relevance and prominence. A business can rank in the top three around its own address and drop several places a short drive away, because the person searching is closer to someone else.

Can I pay Google to rank higher on Google Maps?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads appear in a separate, labelled position. The free listing ranks on relevance, distance and prominence.

Does having the most Google reviews put you first on Maps?

Not on its own. In the Dubai Marina dentist search BTR Consult recorded in September 2026, the most-reviewed business, with 1,039 reviews, ranked 3rd. The business in first place had 178. Reviews help, but category, distance and the rest of the profile decide the order too.

What is the fastest thing to check if my business is not showing on Google Maps?

Your primary category. Open your profile, check the main category, and compare it with the category the top three businesses for your search use. If yours is different, that is the first thing to look at.
