Part 2 of 10 · Getting found: what to measure, channel by channel

Your Google Business Profile is your shopfront. Here is what 10 GBP tools check.

Will Barnardt 10 min read

Your Google Business Profile is probably the first thing a potential customer sees. Not your website. Not your social media. The box that appears when someone searches for what you do, in your area, on their phone. That box is your shopfront.

We wanted to know what a thorough check of that shopfront covers. So we analysed 10 GBP audit tools and mapped every data point they check. The number surprised us.

The most thorough tools check 118 data points across 15 categories. Most business owners have looked at maybe 5.

Why GBP outweighs every other channel

According to Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors study, Google Business Profile signals account for 32% of local pack ranking weight. Reviews account for another 20%. Together, GBP and reviews control 52% of whether you appear in the map results when someone nearby searches for your service.

The majority of the decision sits in those two channels.

And it goes beyond Google search. In 2026, your GBP data is the structured entity record that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude read when generating local business recommendations. A wrong primary category does not just lower your ranking. It can remove you from AI-generated answers entirely.

GBP + Reviews = 52% of local pack ranking weight (Whitespark 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors). Within GBP signals, primary category selection is the single highest-weighted individual factor.

The 15 categories a thorough GBP audit covers

The 5 tools that check the most

Five tools stood out from the 10 we analysed: BrightLocal leads in diagnostic depth with over 300 data points and colour-coded findings; Birdeye validates conversion paths like booking links and call buttons; Whitespark brings ranking-factor authority from its industry-standard study; Synup offers the most structured audit template with edit monitoring; and Uberall adds a forward-looking AI search visibility score. Here is what each one does best.

BrightLocal: the diagnostic depth leader

BrightLocal scans over 300 local SEO data points automatically. It colour-codes every finding as Good, OK, or Poor, which means the business owner does not need to interpret thresholds. We rated its competitor benchmarking against top-ranking local businesses as the most actionable of any tool. It also produces white-label PDF reports that go straight to a client without translation.

Birdeye: continuous auditing with conversion testing

Birdeye audits 60-plus editable profile fields, but what sets it apart is conversion-path validation. It tests whether your booking link actually works, whether the call button routes correctly, and whether the "Get Directions" result is accurate. Most tools check whether a field is filled in. Birdeye checks whether the field does what it is supposed to do.

Whitespark: the authority on ranking factors

Whitespark publishes the industry-standard Local Search Ranking Factors study. Their optimization guide classifies every GBP feature by its ranking influence, which means their recommendations carry weight that other tools cannot match. We rated their strategic depth as the highest in the group.

Synup: the most structured audit template

Synup organises its audit into 11 clearly defined sections with checkbox verification. It also monitors for unauthorized third-party edits to your profile, a feature that most business owners do not know they need until someone changes their hours or phone number without permission.

Uberall: the AI search angle

Uberall offers multiple scoring systems, including a Local Performance Index, an LPO Maturity Score, and, notably, an AI Search Score that rates your visibility across AI search engines on a 1-to-10 scale. That forward-looking AI dimension is rare in GBP tools.

The category problem: one wrong field, nine broken channels

Your primary category is the highest-weighted ranking factor within GBP signals, and when it is wrong the damage extends far beyond ranking. Directory aggregators inherit the incorrect classification and push it downstream to dozens of sites. AI engines describe your business incorrectly. Competitor analysis compares you against the wrong set of businesses. The cascade described in Part 1 often starts with this single field.

When your primary category is wrong, directory listings inherit the error. Data aggregators push the wrong classification downstream to dozens of sites. AI engines describe your business incorrectly. Competitor analysis compares you against the wrong set of businesses. The cascade we described in Part 1 often starts right here.

A dental practice might be categorised as "dentist" when "cosmetic dentist" or "paediatric dentist" would be more specific and more competitive. A logistics company might be under "courier service" when "freight forwarding service" is the category their actual customers search for. The category system has hundreds of options, and the most specific one almost always outperforms the generic one.

Even finding the right Google profile to check is harder than it looks. Some businesses link their profile to a different web address from their main website, which trips simple matching. The BTR Signal Score credits a profile or listing to a business only when the name matches along with the phone number, website or address.

What the best tools do that most businesses miss

The best GBP tools go beyond checking whether a field is filled in. They check four areas that most businesses overlook: photo freshness, not just photo count; review velocity, not just total reviews; booking link validation to confirm conversion paths actually work; and geo-grid ranking maps that show where you appear across your entire service area. Each one reveals problems that a basic audit misses.

Photo freshness, not just photo count

Most businesses upload photos once and forget. The best tools check whether a photo has been uploaded in the last 30 days, because freshness is an engagement signal. They also compare your photo count against the top three businesses in your local pack. If your closest competitor has 47 photos and you have 6, that gap is visible to customers and to Google.

Review velocity, not just review count

Having 50 reviews is good. Having 50 reviews with the most recent one from eight months ago is a problem. The best tools track review velocity: how many new reviews you receive per month, whether that number is rising or falling, and how it compares to competitors. A competitor collecting three new reviews per week while you collect one per month is overtaking you steadily, and most businesses never notice.

Booking link validation

Birdeye tests whether your booking or appointment link actually completes the flow. A broken booking link silently loses customers. They click, nothing happens (or the page errors), and they go to the next result. No one calls to tell you the link is broken. We rated tools that validate conversion paths significantly higher than those that only check whether a URL is present.

Geo-grid ranking maps

Your local pack position is not the same everywhere in your service area. A tool like Local Falcon maps your ranking across a geographic grid, showing where you rank first, where you rank fifth, and where you do not appear at all. For service-area businesses, this is the most revealing view of GBP performance available.

The AI visibility layer most audits skip

Six of the 118 checks we catalogued focus specifically on whether AI search engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude) mention your business when someone asks for a recommendation in your category and location. This is a 2026 addition that most existing GBP audits skip entirely. Your Google Business Profile is the primary entity record these engines read, and gaps in your profile can mean total omission from AI-generated answers.

Your GBP data is the entity record that AI engines read. When someone asks ChatGPT "Who is the best physiotherapist in my city?", the answer draws from structured data sources, and your Google Business Profile is the most authoritative one. If your profile has the wrong category, incomplete services, or too few reviews, you may be invisible to AI search entirely.

What the BTR Signal Score looks at

The BTR Signal Score focuses on the checks that decide whether a customer finds and picks you, and it compares each one with the three businesses that win your searches: your category against theirs, your reviews in the last 90 days against theirs, and your opening hours against theirs. Then it tells you what to change and writes the business description for you.

None of the 10 GBP tools we tested was built around a single local market. The clearest gap is local review platforms. In South Africa, for example, Hellopeter is the review platform that matters most for service businesses, and not one of the 10 tools we tested monitors it. Customers check a service business there, so a check that ignores it misses part of the picture.

The five leading GBP tools

Tool Depth Actionability Best for
BrightLocal 5/5 4/5 Full-depth auditing with competitor benchmarks
Birdeye 5/5 5/5 Continuous monitoring with conversion-path testing
Whitespark 5/5 4/5 Strategic depth backed by ranking factor authority
Synup 4/5 4/5 Structured audit template with edit monitoring
Uberall 4/5 4/5 Multi-location with AI search scoring

The gap between diagnosis and action

Every GBP tool we tested finds problems. The best ones also prescribe the fix, and that distinction is the gap between diagnosis and action. "Your business description is missing your primary service" is a finding. "Here is a replacement description you can paste in today" is a deliverable. Reports that stop at the finding sit in a downloads folder. Reports that include the fix get used.

That distinction separates a report that sits in a downloads folder from one that changes how a business shows up online. The BTR Signal Score sits firmly on the deliverable side: every finding comes with what we saw, what to do, and who should do it. The description is written for your business from what is on your website and Google profile, inside Google's character limit, ready to paste in.

Frequently asked questions

How many data points should a GBP audit check?

The best GBP audit tools check between 60 and 300 data points. Our research identified 118 distinct checks across 15 categories, from basic business information through to AI search visibility. Most businesses have only checked 5 to 10 of those 118 items.

Which GBP categories matter most for ranking?

Primary category selection is the single highest-weighted ranking factor within Google Business Profile signals (Whitespark 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors). Getting this wrong does not just lower your ranking. It can exclude you from the local pack entirely and hide you from AI search engines that rely on category data to generate recommendations.

How often should I audit my Google Business Profile?

Monthly for review health and posting activity. Quarterly for a full audit covering categories, descriptions, photos, citations, and competitive positioning. After any major change to your business, such as a new service, a new location, or a rebrand, run a full audit immediately. Google and third parties can edit your profile without notice, so regular checks catch unauthorized changes.

Does my GBP affect whether AI recommends my business?

Yes. Your Google Business Profile is the primary entity record that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude read when generating local business recommendations. A wrong primary category can mean total omission from AI-generated answers.
