Marketing agency, managed service or do it yourself? What South African agencies charge and promise

Will Barnardt 6 min read

Agency, managed service or do it yourself: which suits a small business?

It depends on what you need done and how much of your own time you can give it. A marketing agency suits an owner who wants one specific service, such as SEO or ads, at a lower monthly price and can manage the scope themselves. A managed growth service suits an owner who wants every channel customers use run as one system, with a monthly report, and can fund a higher monthly fee. Doing it yourself suits an owner with time, patience and a tight budget, because the tools are free and the cost is hours. On 6 October 2026 BTR Consult read the published price pages of nine South African agencies. Here is what they charge, what they promise in writing, and the questions to ask before you sign anything, including with us.

What do South African agencies charge per month?

Entry package, per monthRand
Agencies with a price in the page text6 of 9
Lowest entryR3,500
Median entryR6,750
Highest entryR8,500

These are entry packages, and many cover a handful of pages or keywords. The other three agencies show prices only through scripts we could not check, so they are left out of the figures.

What do South African agencies put in writing?

On their published pages, of 9 South African agenciesCount
State a minimum term (3 months at one, 6 months at the other)2
Recommend a minimum term (6 months) without requiring it1
Say month-to-month or no lock-in3
Say nothing about the term3
Describe a report8

The study does not split the next items by country, so these counts cover all 19 agencies we read across both markets:

On their published pages, of all 19 agencies readCount
Say clearly that you keep your accounts and website if you leave3
Say nothing about ownership14
Name Google Business Profile work11
Name review management3
Offer WhatsApp as a managed service0
Say nothing about whether there is a setup fee18

Silence is not the same as a bad term. But who holds the logins, and what the monthly report will show you, are the two things that decide whether you can judge an agency and leave it cleanly. Most pages left out the first, and none of the report descriptions we read mentioned named actions.

How do the three options compare over a year?

The figures exclude VAT and ad spend and are arithmetic on published prices, not quotes. On price alone, BTR Consult costs more than every entry package in our survey. That is the honest starting point.

What does doing it yourself really cost?

The tools are free: Google Business Profile, Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and the WhatsApp Business app. The cost is your time, and nobody has measured it per task. The nearest figure is a LocaliQ survey of more than 730 small business owners and marketers worldwide, where 53% said they spend 1 to 10 hours a week on marketing overall (LocaliQ). Some jobs take the most time by hand: checking whether AI assistants name you, correcting listings across dozens of directories, and tracking what competitors changed.

The five questions to ask before you sign with anyone

  1. Who owns the Google, Meta and WhatsApp accounts and the website if I leave? Ask for it in the contract, not on a call.
  2. What is the minimum term, and what does leaving cost? Ask about notice periods and exit fees.
  3. What exactly is included each month? Pages, keywords, channels. Reviews and WhatsApp are often not.
  4. What will the monthly report show, and what happens when a number goes the wrong way? A report that lists numbers without actions tells you little.
  5. Is there a setup or build fee? Of the 19 pages we read, 18 did not say.

Who BTR Consult is not for

  • Owners who want social media content created and posted, or paid ads managed. Neither is in our plans.
  • Owners whose budget is below the monthly fee plus the once-off Foundation Fee.
  • Owners who want no minimum commitment. Our plans have a 3-month minimum.
  • Owners who want a promise of rankings, traffic or enquiries. We promise a monthly report with named actions, and the right to leave and keep everything.
  • Owners who need one thing fixed once. The full BTR Signal Score report (R799, once-off) puts every fix in order and writes your Google description, review request and WhatsApp away message, and you carry the work out yourself.
  • Businesses whose competitor in the same industry and area already works with us. We take one business per industry per area.

If you are weighing it up, the free BTR Signal Score shows what customers see when they search for a business like yours and the first three things to fix, whoever ends up fixing them. Our prices are on the pricing page.

Method: BTR Consult read the published pricing pages of 19 digital marketing and SEO agencies across two markets, 9 of them South African, found by search on 6 October 2026, and recorded only what each page stated. This guide uses the nine South African pages. Prices in the medians were confirmed in the page text for six of them. Counts marked "all 19" come from the wider survey, which does not split those items by country. A convenience sample, not the whole market. No agency is named.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a digital marketing agency cost per month in South Africa?

Of six South African agencies that publish an entry package price in the page text, the median was R6,750 a month, from R3,500 to R8,500 (BTR Consult survey, 6 October 2026). Entry packages often cover a few pages or keywords, so check the scope as well as the price.

Who owns my Google Business Profile and website if I leave an agency?

You should, but check it in writing before you sign. Of 19 agency price pages BTR Consult read across both markets, 3 stated clearly that the client keeps the accounts, and 14 did not mention ownership at all.

Do South African digital marketing agencies lock you into a contract?

Some do. Of nine South African agencies, two state a minimum term (3 and 6 months), three say month-to-month or no lock-in, one recommends six months without requiring it and three say nothing on their pages. Ask for the term in writing.

Is it worth paying for a managed growth service instead of doing it yourself?

Only if the hours matter more to you than the fee. The free tools cost nothing, but setting up and keeping up nine channels takes time every week, and the work only pays off if someone reads the numbers and acts on them.
