What does a business buyer meet when they search for a distributor in Gauteng?
A short Maps list of mostly small listings, organic results that are almost all suppliers' own websites, and, on the web results, an AI summary. On 20 October 2026 BTR Consult ran four Maps searches for chemical, cleaning and packaging suppliers in Gauteng and recorded the first 10 free cards from each (paid ads left out), 40 in all. Phone numbers showed on 39 of the 40 cards, hours on all 40, and a website button on 23 of the 30 cards in the three chemical and cleaning searches. The fourth search, for packaging, used a card layout without website buttons, so we could not count them there.
Does the distributor with the most reviews come first on Google Maps?
Not in three of our four searches. In the four searches the most-reviewed card sat at position 8, 1, 2 and 10, so in the Pretoria search it did come first. Across the 40 cards, the median for positions 1 to 3 was 15.5 reviews (12 cards) and for positions 4 to 10 it was 13 (28 cards), too few cards to read anything into. Three packaging listings with 505, 688 and 953 reviews pulled the average for the lower positions up. Google says it ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. These samples are small and show nothing about cause.
| Search (20 October 2026) | Cards recorded | Reviews, lowest to highest | Median reviews | Cards under 20 reviews | Most reviewed sat at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "industrial cleaning chemicals supplier Gauteng" | 10 | 2 to 221 | 9.5 | 7 | Position 8 |
| "janitorial supplies wholesale Pretoria" | 10 | 4 to 134 | 7 | 7 | Position 1 |
| "bulk degreaser supplier Johannesburg" | 10 | 0 to 31 | 9 | 8 | Position 2 |
| "packaging supplies wholesale Johannesburg" | 10 | 12 to 953 | 88 | 2 | Position 10 |
In the three chemical and cleaning searches, 22 of the 30 cards had fewer than 20 reviews and the median was 7. Sixteen of all 40 had fewer than 10. A low count may simply mean a new or small business, and we did not check. Search wording changed how long the list was: the Gauteng chemicals and Johannesburg packaging searches returned 57 and 53 cards, the Pretoria and degreaser searches 10 each, which may be the signed-out limited view rather than the real number of businesses. Six listings appeared in both the Gauteng and Pretoria searches, so the 40 cards are 34 distinct listings.
Who ranks on Google's first page when a business searches for a distributor?
The distributors' own websites. Of 35 organic results on page 1 across the same four searches, 32 were a distributor's or manufacturer's own site, 3 were one online shop page that appeared in three of the four searches, and none were business directories. We counted 16 homepages, 12 category pages, 3 product pages and 4 other pages, so a buyer often lands on a category or product page, not a homepage. Google showed fewer than 10 organic results on page 1 in every search. Directories may rank on page 2 or for other wording, which we did not check.
The Maps list and the web list were close to separate. Of the 35 supplier domains we looked at, only 2 appeared in both a Maps top 10 and the organic results, matched by website address, so that is a minimum. Google also put an AI Overview above the organic results in all four searches, and it named businesses. We did not record which, and its wording changes between loads.
What does a buyer find when they open a distributor's website?
Usually a way to get in touch, and almost never a mention of credit on the homepage. We opened the homepage of 35 supplier websites once each. 34 loaded as a normal page and one failed with a certificate error, which a phone might have handled differently, so read that as "could not read". Of the 34 we could read:
| Distributor homepages, 20 October 2026 | Count (34 read) |
|---|---|
| Tap-to-call link | 14 |
| WhatsApp link | 7 |
| A form, or "quote" or "enquiry" wording | 25 |
| None of the phone, WhatsApp, form or quote routes | 6 |
| The word "delivery" on the page | 21 |
| A rand-amount pattern (not all were product prices) | 11 |
| Credit or account wording | 1 |
| The words "add to cart" | 10 |
These counts come from one request from one South African connection, and anything added by a script, a plugin or a chat bubble would be missed, so treat each as a minimum. The form count includes search boxes and logins, and 7 pages used "quote" or "enquiry" wording at all. Of the 11 pages with a rand amount, at least one was a free-delivery threshold and one an empty-cart placeholder. Credit terms may sit on inner pages we did not open, so one in 34 says little about who offers credit and only that few homepages mention it. Median time to download the page code was 0.73 seconds, which is not how fast the page feels on a phone.
What time do distributors' Maps cards say they close?
Only two of the 40 cards were open after 6pm, and both said "Open 24 hours". Nearly all the others closed between 3:30pm and 5:30pm, and two closed at 6pm. We read the cards at about 11:20 on a weekday, so this is what the listing says, not an evening call. For a buyer who ends the day without a quote, the hours on the card are what they see before they decide whether to ring.
What do AI assistants tell a business buyer who asks for a distributor?
The local question got a named shortlist in both engines and the general question got a checklist. On 20 October 2026 we asked "Who is a good janitorial supplies wholesaler in Pretoria?" and "How do I choose a cleaning chemicals distributor in Gauteng?" of ChatGPT and Gemini, signed out, one run each. The Pretoria question produced five named businesses in each. ChatGPT added phone numbers, and star ratings with review counts for three of its five. Gemini gave a location and offerings for each. The Gauteng question produced five names in ChatGPT and none in Gemini. Perplexity asked us to sign up before it would answer, so it is not in these figures, and Google AI Mode and Claude were not recorded.
Both Gauteng answers told the buyer to ask for Safety Data Sheets, to check minimum order quantities and delivery coverage, and to compare price on concentrated product. Only ChatGPT said to ask three or four suppliers to quote the same basket and to trial a small order. Neither answer told the buyer to check credit terms. We have not checked any rule on safety data sheets and make no claim about what the law requires of a supplier. The point for a business is smaller. In our answers a buyer was told to compare minimum orders, delivery and documentation. The card fields we recorded were hours, phone and website, and none of them covers those, so say where a buyer can read yours.
What is the first-call check for a distributor's own listing?
It is six steps in the order a buyer meets them, each with the figure we found. This is BTR Consult's own checklist and it describes the work we do, so weigh it knowing that. Each step takes a few minutes on a phone, none of it is a promise about position, and Google's guidelines govern all of it.
- The card. Search the product and the city the way a buyer would, such as "janitorial supplies wholesale" plus your area. Find yourself and note your category, rating and review count. Across the three chemical and cleaning searches, the median card had 7 reviews, so a low count is common.
- The hours. They should match when somebody really answers. Only 2 of 40 cards were open after 6pm. If a buyer needs a quote at 4pm, make sure the number is answered.
- The number. 39 of 40 cards showed one. Tap yours from your phone: it should reach a person who can take a product, a quantity and a delivery area.
- The website. Open yours on mobile data. 23 of 30 chemical and cleaning cards had a website button, and 34 of the 35 sites we tried loaded. Check the page is reachable and that it offers a way to ask for a quote. Two of the 23 website buttons pointed to a webmail page or an unrelated site, so tap yours.
- The route to an order. 25 of 34 homepages had a form or quote wording, 14 a tap-to-call link and 7 WhatsApp, and 6 had none of the four. Make sure at least one route is watched the same day.
- The three buyer questions. Where you deliver, your minimum order, and how a business opens an account. 21 of 34 homepages mentioned delivery and 1 mentioned credit or an account. The assistants told buyers to ask about minimum orders and delivery, so a distributor who states them answers what is being asked.
What does it cost to have someone look after this?
From R799 once, to R12,500 a month plus a Foundation Fee. The free BTR Signal Score gives you your score, why the business above you is chosen and your first fix. The full report is R799 once and you do the work. INBOUND runs Maps, reviews and WhatsApp together for R12,500 a month plus a once-off Foundation Fee of R15,000 to R45,000, quoted in writing. We did not survey what agencies charge distributors, so we make no comparison with them.
Where does BTR Consult fit?
It fits a distributor that wants Google Maps, reviews and WhatsApp run for it by one team, with a monthly report that names the metrics and the action behind each. We take one distributor per product category per area, so we are not the right fit if a competitor in your category and area is already a client, if you want an online store or marketplace listings managed, or if you already have an in-house marketing team. The Growth Engine already runs inside a distributor in Gauteng, and BTR Consult runs on the same engine.
INBOUND has a 3-month minimum from go-live, then 30 days written notice, no exit fee, and you own every account. Start with the free BTR Signal Score, then compare the monthly plans on the pricing page. The page for distributors in South Africa shows how the nine channels are set up.
How was this checked, and what are the limits?
- Maps searches, 20 October 2026. Four searches in a browser in South Africa, signed out, in English: "industrial cleaning chemicals supplier Gauteng", "janitorial supplies wholesale Pretoria", "bulk degreaser supplier Johannesburg" and "packaging supplies wholesale Johannesburg", between 11:19 and 11:26. We recorded the first 10 non-sponsored cards in Maps order: rating, review count, category, hours, phone and website button. We did not set a location; Google read the connection as near Pretoria.
- Limited view. Google showed the notice "You're seeing a limited view of Google Maps", which is the signed-out view. The Gauteng chemicals and Johannesburg packaging searches returned 57 and 53 cards, the Pretoria and degreaser searches 10 each; we recorded 10 from each.
- Google web results. The same four wordings on Google web search, page 1 only. 35 organic results, with ads, the local pack and the AI Overview left out. We sorted each as a supplier's own site, a directory, an online shop of unclear operator or other, from the address and snippet, so that classing is our judgement.
- AI answers, 20 October 2026. Two prompts asked of ChatGPT and Gemini, signed out, with no location set, one run each, between 11:36 and 11:55. Perplexity required sign-up and was not recorded. Answers change between runs, so none of this is a ranking. Businesses named in the answers were not checked and are not listed here.
- Sponsored cards. Paid cards were left out of every count. Whether they affect the order of the free cards is not known.
- Website read. The homepage of 35 supplier sites, requested once from one connection and read as raw HTML (the code, not the rendered page). Counts of what is present are minimums, and pattern matches such as "form" and the rand pattern can misfire.
- Limits. Correlation only. These figures show what was there on one day for four wordings across two trade groups, chemicals and cleaning, and packaging. They cannot show that reviews, category, name or any single signal causes a position, and they say nothing about other kinds of distributor. They do not cover profile completeness, how recent the reviews are, whether profiles are claimed, or what buyers do next. No business is named. BTR Consult sells the full report and INBOUND, so check the counts yourself. One of the 40 cards belongs to a distributor BTR Consult works with; it is counted like any other and is not named.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need hundreds of Google reviews to show up when a business searches for a distributor in Gauteng?
Not on this evidence. In BTR Consult's three chemical and cleaning-supply Maps searches on 20 October 2026, 22 of the 30 cards had fewer than 20 reviews and the median was 7. The packaging search was different, with a median of 88. Google says it ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence includes review count and score, so reviews may matter. These samples are small and cannot show cause.
Do business buyers actually use Google Maps to find a distributor?
We cannot say. This study recorded what appears when someone searches, not what buyers do. We did not survey buyers, count calls or see anyone's quote requests. It shows what a buyer who does search would meet, on one day, from one connection near Pretoria.
Should my website show prices?
We cannot say what it does for enquiries. Of the 34 distributor homepages we could read, 11 matched a rand-amount pattern, and at least 4 of those looked like product prices. At least 2 were a delivery threshold or a cart placeholder, and the rest were not checked. In our ChatGPT answers a buyer was told to ask for wholesale price lists, delivery fees and bulk discounts, so a buyer may go looking for them. Where you keep prices behind a login or a quote, say so on the page.
Is a phone number enough, or do I need WhatsApp and a quote form?
Most homepages offered something. 14 of the 34 had a tap-to-call link, 7 had a WhatsApp link and 25 had a form or quote wording, and 6 had none of those routes. Those are minimums from the page code, since a button added by a script would be missed. We did not test which route buyers prefer. A route nobody watches is worse than none, so pick the ones someone answers the same day.
Will ChatGPT or Gemini recommend my business?
We cannot promise it, and nobody can. In our recorded answers on 20 October 2026, ChatGPT and Gemini named 15 different businesses between them and no business was named by both. 7 of the 15 also showed up in our Maps or Google lists, and 8 did not. Answers change between runs, so treat this as a snapshot, not a ranking.
